The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) is seeking a visionary and compassionate leader to serve as Assistant Commissioner of Developmental Services. This position plays a pivotal role in shaping and overseeing programs that support individuals with developmental disabilities across Virginia.  As a key member of the Community Services leadership team, this position drives strategic initiatives, ensures regulatory compliance, and champions person-centered care across all community-based services. This position is required to be in Central Office four days per week and requires statewide travel.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Leading and managing statewide developmental services programs and initiatives.
  • Supervising directors and program managers across multiple facilities.
  • Developing and implementing policies that promote equity, inclusion, and quality of care.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders, advocacy groups, and government agencies.
  • Overseeing budgets, contracts, and performance metrics.
  • Ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Developmental Disabilities knowledge and experience, including management experience, across the continuum of care including facility and community services.
  • Working knowledge of public and private developmental disabilities service delivery systems.
  • Ability to communicate succinctly and effectively.
  • Ability to follow through successfully on projects and assignments independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to create and sustain effective relationships and liaison with facility staff, central office departments, CSB and other stakeholders and constituents as required.
  • Flexibility and ability to manage multiple competing priorities effectively.
